The ARD landscape in Spain

In Spain, ARD activities are mainly funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development- AECID) and mainly developed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation , the National Institute for Agriculture and Food Research and Technology (INIA) and a number of regional public research institutions such as IVIA, IFAPA and IRTA. The total amount devoted to ARD in 2008 was 5.158.353 Euro, under the various forms of cooperation described below.

MULTILATERAL COOPERATION

CGIAR - The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research

The INIA has been the Spanish representative in GGIAR since 1980. Most of the Spanish contribution is devoted to specific projects. In 2008, 1.852.124 Euro were addressed to the following projects:

  • Genetic resources in wheat. CIMMYT (Mexico)
  • Innovation in potato improvement. CIP (Peru)
  • Doctor Programme. CIP
  • Iniciativa Amazonica; CIAT (Colombia); CIFOR (Indonesia); ICRAFT (Kenya); Biodiversity International
  • Climate Change and Forestry in Latin America. CIFOR
  • Forestry Genetic Resources in Latin America. Biodiversity International
  • Livestock Diseases in Africa. ILRI (Kenya)
  • Genetic Resources . EPC/GR and EUFORGEN
  • INIA System Support in Latin America. CIP
  • Poverty Fight text translations. IFPRI (USA)


FONTAGRO. Agricultural Technology Regional Funding

INIA is the Spanish representative at this fund created by most of the Latin American countries whose interest finances development projects in Latin America. The Spanish contribution to the fund is 10 million Euro.

CPR. Cooperative Research Programme (OCDE)

INIA, as Spanish Government representative, is a funder organization together with other 26 countries at this programme of Cooperative Research.

ECART. European Consortium for agricultural Research in the Tropics

Its objective is to facilitate the agricultural research for development in Europe and World-wide through alliances between groups from North and South. The INIA became a member of this organization in 2008.

INIA International courses

INIA has implemented international courses for Latin American university- qualified persons working in research centres, carried out in Spain, Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), La Antigua (Guatemala) and Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia) and on issues such as animal health, rural development, water resources, livestock production, food economy, forest-based industries, etc.

Forestry Research

AECID has carried out three programmes of Forestry Research in cooperation with Arab countries, Latin America and Caribe.

The Azahar Programme

Is an initiative of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID) on Sustainable Development Cooperation, Environment Protection and Protection of Natural Resources in the Mediterranean Region. Some universities, public research institutions and the Spanish National Research Council are involved under the Ministry of Science and Innovation in the Azahar Programme. The amount devoted to it in 2008 was 583.870 Euro.

BILATERAL COOPERATION

The Institutions involved in ARD maintain bilateral cooperation with different countries in Africa, America and Asia.
